NISI MASA Script Contest 2009

> Introduction

The NISI MASA Short Film Scripts Contest is a unique initiative in its ambition as well as in its spirit. The objectives we want to achieve through the contest are to develop short film projects at a European level and to create a network of young professionals.

Since the beginning, the Script Contest was designed as a pan-European project. From 7 organising countries, the contest has grown to such an extend that it is now present in 19 countries.

This matchless competition in Europe is coordinated on the local level by the NISI MASA associations; all involved in the youth and cinema fields. Every year, from mid-April to the end of July, hundreds of enthusiastic ‘nisimasians’ promote the contest in Europe. In each country, they form a national jury to pre-select 1 to 3 finalist scripts that will be then submitted to the members of the European jury.

The Short Script Contest aims to encourage young Europeans to tackle relevant issues: European, society themes…We would like to promote the diversity of young people views. Thus each year participants have to write a script according to an assigned theme, such as TABOO”, the new theme for 2009

> Jury 2009

Since our script contest is made by young people for young talents, its jury has always been composed of NISI MASA members. The selection process is organised in two steps. Firstly, on a national level, each local organisation chooses from one to three finalist(s), depending of the total number of scripts received.

Then, before mid-September, around 28 scripts are translated into English in order to be submitted to the European jury. This jury is made up of one representative of each NISI MASA organisation. In order to fulfil their role, juries must read beforehand all the finalist scripts. Once the jury members meet, they end up by selecting three winning scripts after group discussions spaced out on several days. The jury is lead by two moderators. Professionals possibly attend the meeting to give advices and comments. The three scriptwriters’ winner names are officially revealed by one of the European jury’s representative during a film festival or a special screening, where the jury meeting takes place. The results are announced one day after on the NISI MASA website and by press communiqué.

What also makes our jury unique is the meeting place! As for the contest’s theme, the location of the jury meeting changes every year. Each jury is then hosted in a different country, usually along with a film festival. After France in 2002, the jury has successively gathered in Spain (Alcala de Henares), in Germany along with the INTERFILM festival of Berlin, in Finland in 2006 in Helsinki and in Kars (North-East Turkey) during the 13th ‘On Wheels Festival’. In 2008 the jury gathered in Zagreb, Croatia along the One Take Film Festival.
This year, the jury meeting will be held at the end of November in Brussels, Belgium.

Twelve winners of the 2009 NISI MASA EUROPEAN SCRIPT CONTEST will get a full scholarship to participate in the European Short Pitch workshop. Divided in two sessions, they will have the chance to work on their scripts with the help of professional tutors during one week at the Moulin d’Andé, an internationally-known centre for screenwriting. The second session will focus on pitching training and prepare for a unique pitching session in front of 25 European producers and buyers.
The scriptwriting session will take place from the 11th to the 16th of January 2010, and the pitching session will take place in the beginning of April 2010 (to be confirmed).
